Let’s travel back to 1973 when the movies “American Graffiti” and “The Getaway” were released and the top songs were “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” by Jim Croce and “Crocodile Rock” by Elton John.
The club name actually developed out of two new groups who were forming Street Rod Clubs at the same time. One was in San Diego and the other in Berdoo. After those long drives back and forth to each other’s meetings, (Over the Hill), and an increase in local interest, “The Over the Hill Gang” was born.
The original plaques had the letters SCSRA on them. It stood for Southern California Street Rod Association. The original logo was drawn by the club founder, John Pickle, and represented two cars owned by Paul “Kip” Dunne. Today, now known as “Over The Hill Gang-San Diego” they are 200 plus members strong and continue with pre-49 cars and proudly retain the original logo. You will see them at events everywhere in their yellow shirts.
In 2003 they celebrated 30 years at their signature event, The Streak. The Streak has been an on-going event from the beginning and has been held at “Campland on the Bay” since 1992. Every year it’s a sell out with over 400 cars and hundreds of people camping. It’s known for a big raffle, live entertainment and numerous campground parties.
